New York, USA— Her Excellency Dr. Filomena Mendes Gonçalves, Minister of Health of Cabo Verde, has been honoured with the Global Female Impact Leadership (GFIL) Award at the Global Power Women Yearbook (GPWY) 2024 conference, held at Graduate Centre, City University of New York (CUNY). A renowned advocate for political leadership and human rights, Dr. Gonçalves was recognised for her transformative leadership in public health and her dedication to promoting human dignity and gender equality.

The long anticipated event took place on the 25th September 2024 at the Graduate Centre, City University of New York (CUNY), centered around the theme “Advancing the Transformative Power of Technology through Women’s Lens: Shaping the Future of Business and Governance.” The event, organised by the Centre for Economic and Leadership Development (CELD) and Amazons Watch Magazine (AWM), gathered prominent female leaders from across the globe to honor their achievements and explore the critical role of women in driving technological innovation and influencing the future of both business and governance.

With a distinguished law degree from the University of Coimbra, one of Portugal’s most prestigious institutions, Dr. Gonçalves built her career as an attorney specialising in family, municipal, commercial, and public works law. Her legal expertise has significantly influenced her approach to governance, always centring on the protection of human dignity and fundamental rights.

Her commitment to social justice and women’s rights fuelled her rise in politics. Dr. Gonçalves has held key roles, including Minister of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers and Parliamentary Affairs, where she led efforts to ensure gender equity and democracy.

Since becoming Minister of Health in 2022, Dr. Gonçalves has demonstrated visionary leadership during a time of significant health challenges in Cabo Verde. Under her leadership, Cabo Verde was officially certified malaria-free by the World Health Organisation (WHO)—a landmark achievement that highlights her ability to mobilise resources on both national and international levels to safeguard public health.

Beyond tackling communicable diseases, Dr. Gonçalves has been a champion of preventive healthcare. She spearheaded programs aimed at combating non-communicable diseases, such as cardiovascular conditions, by collaborating with WHO to enhance the training of healthcare professionals. Her efforts have strengthened Cabo Verde’s healthcare system, improving both treatment and prevention strategies.

A key focus of her tenure has been mental health, especially following the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2024, she declared the Year of Mental Health in Cabo Verde, launching initiatives to raise awareness and improve access to mental health services nationwide. Dr. Gonçalves has made mental health a national priority, advocating for an inclusive healthcare system that addresses both physical and psychological well-being.

Her leadership highlights a holistic approach to health, seamlessly integrating mental health into the broader healthcare agenda. Through public health campaigns and community outreach, Dr. Gonçalves continues to work toward improving the quality of life for all Cape Verdeans.

In addition to her public health work, Dr. Gonçalves has been a leading voice for gender equality and women’s empowerment, both in Cabo Verde and across the globe. As a leader within the Movement for Democracy (MpD) and President of the Association of Democratic Women, she has consistently advocated for women’s increased participation in politics and decision-making. Her efforts have led to stronger gender-balanced policies and more equal representation.

Regionally, she has been active in African politics, serving as a member of the Network of Women Parliamentarians of the ECOWAS Parliament and founding the Parliamentary Network to Combat Clandestine Migration. Through these roles, she has tackled social justice issues and championed the rights of migrants, cementing her status as a defender of human rights across Africa.

At the GPWY 2024, Dr. Gonçalves joined an esteemed group of global female leaders and honourees, including H.E. Robinah Nabbanja, Prime Minister of Uganda; First Ladies such as H.E. Rossana Maria Briceño of Belize, H.E. Leticia Ocampos of Paraguay, Dr. Isaura Nyusi of Mozambique, H.E Arya Devi Ali (Guyana),  and H.E. Dinisia Dos Reis Embaló of Guinea-Bissau. Together, they shared their experiences and vision for a more inclusive and equitable future.

New York, USA— Her Excellency Arya Devi Ali, First Lady of Guyana, was honoured with the prestigious Global Female Impact Leadership (GFIL) Award at the Global Power Women Yearbook (GPWY) 2024 event, held on September 25, 2024, at the Graduate Centre, City University of New York (CUNY). Mrs. Ali was celebrated for her groundbreaking efforts in advancing the rights of women, children, and persons with disabilities. Additionally, she delivered a powerful speech as a featured guest speaker, reaffirming her commitment to social change.

Centered around the theme “Advancing the Transformative Power of Technology through Women’s Lens: Shaping the Future of Business and Governance,” the event, organised by the Centre for Economic and Leadership Development (CELD) and Amazons Watch Magazine (AWM), gathered prominent female leaders from across the globe to honor their achievements and explore the critical role of women in driving technological innovation and influencing the future of both business and governance.

Arya Devi Ali became the youngest First Lady in Guyana’s history when her husband, Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali, became the ninth Executive President of Guyana on August 2, 2020. Her path to this prominent role has been marked by dedication to education, public service, and advocacy.

Before becoming First Lady, Mrs. Ali worked at the Guyana Revenue Authority, where her experience in public service deepened her passion for helping others and laid the foundation for her future initiatives as a national leader.

Transformative Initiatives

Since assuming her role as First Lady, Arya Devi Ali has launched several impactful initiatives aimed at improving the lives of women, children, and marginalised communities in Guyana. One of her flagship projects, the Menstrual Hygiene Initiative, provides free sanitary products to over 32,000 school-aged girls annually. This program addresses period poverty, ensuring that no girl misses school due to a lack of sanitary products.

Another notable initiative is the National Beautification Project, which focusses on creating recreational spaces and promoting environmental conservation in urban and rural areas. This initiative aligns with her broader mission to foster clean, green, and healthy communities in Guyana.

Mrs. Ali’s InclusAbility Program is designed to integrate persons with disabilities into society more effectively. The initiative offers counselling, employment opportunities, and financial support to help individuals with disabilities achieve independence and dignity. Through this program, Mrs. Ali is working to eliminate societal barriers and create a more inclusive Guyana.

Her Adopt-an-Orphanage Initiative connects corporate sponsors with underfunded orphanages across Guyana, providing essential support to nearly 300 disadvantaged children each year. By partnering orphanages with businesses, Mrs. Ali ensures that vulnerable children receive the resources and care they need to thrive.

Advocacy and Awards

Arya Devi Ali’s dedication to women’s empowerment and children’s rights has earned her numerous accolades. As a tireless advocate for gender equality, she has significantly improved opportunities for women and girls in underserved communities. In addition to her role as First Lady, Mrs. Ali is the patron of several non-governmental organisations (NGOs), where she continues to champion causes close to her heart.

Recognised for her advocacy in health, education, and women’s empowerment, Mrs. Nyusi also delivered a keynote speech highlighting her unwavering commitment to social change in Mozambique.

Since becoming First Lady in 2015, Mrs. Nyusi has been instrumental in advancing several humanitarian and social initiatives, particularly in maternal and child health, education, and the empowerment of women and girls.

The Global Power Women Yearbook (GPWY) 2024 was held on 25th September 2024 at the Graduate Centre, City University of New York (CUNY), centered around the theme “Advancing the Transformative Power of Technology through Women’s Lens: Shaping the Future of Business and Governance.” The event, organised by the Centre for Economic and Leadership Development (CELD) and Amazons Watch Magazine (AWM), gathered prominent female leaders from across the globe to honor their achievements and explore the critical role of women in driving technological innovation and influencing the future of both business and governance.

Advocate for health and maternal care

With a background in education, Mrs. Nyusi has been a strong advocate for improving educational opportunities for children in Mozambique. She is equally recognised for her dedication to maternal and child health. Her leadership has driven national health campaigns focused on reducing maternal and infant mortality rates, a pressing issue in Mozambique where healthcare access is limited in many areas.

Mrs. Nyusi’s work includes raising awareness about the importance of maternal healthcare, nutrition, and early childhood care, significantly impacting families across the country. Through partnerships with international organisations and local stakeholders, she continues to promote quality healthcare access for mothers and children, improving outcomes for Mozambique’s most vulnerable populations.

Empowering Women and Combating Gender-Based Violence

Beyond healthcare, Mrs. Nyusi is a passionate advocate for gender equality. She has played a key role in the fight against gender-based violence (GBV), leading initiatives to combat domestic violence and promote women’s rights. Her campaigns and workshops have heightened community awareness of GBV and the importance of women’s empowerment.

Thanks to her efforts, Mozambique has seen increased momentum in addressing gender-based violence, with stronger support mechanisms for survivors. Mrs. Nyusi has also championed programs that provide economic opportunities for women, equipping them with skills and resources to achieve financial independence.

Her initiatives have included building schools, enhancing teacher training, and expanding educational programs, all aimed at breaking the cycle of poverty and unlocking the potential of Mozambique’s youth.

Throughout her tenure, Mrs. Nyusi has maintained a strong commitment to social causes, consistently providing essential services and creating opportunities for community development.
